The Romance of Magno Rubio and Katipunan-USA
Katipunan-USA has reserved a limited block of tickets for the closing night show of THE ROMANCE OF MAGNO RUBIO at the Laguna Playhouse on Sunday, December 7, 2003 at 8:00p.m. The play, by Lonnie Carter, is based on a short story by Carlos Bulosan.
Set in California in the 1930s, THE ROMANCE OF MAGNO RUBIO is the story of a lonely, illiterate Filipino farm worker who falls in love with Clarabelle, a white woman he has never seen and knows only through the “pen pal” section of a movie magazine. He must toil in the fields all day to pay a fellow worker for every English word he needs to write his love letters. A funny, and highly moving story that unfolds as their courtship blossoms through the mail and his long-awaited wedding day arrives.
This production features the same Obie Award-winning creative team from MA-YI THEATER COMPANY that garnered rave reviews in New York and Manila. Critics and audiences in both cities were unanimous in their praise of the play’s moving and humorous portrayal of the Filipino Migrant worker.
All performances at the Cultural Center of the Philippines were completely sold out – even on the day of the attempted coup d’etat!
Don’t miss the chance to see what all the fuss is about – and why THE ROMANCE OF MAGNO RUBIO has won the hearts of audiences every where it has been shown.
See this play, and learn something about what it means to be a Filipino in America.
THE ROMANCE OF MAGNO RUBIO was developed and given its world premiere by Ma-Yi Theater Company, Jorge Ortoll (Executive Director), Ralph B. Peña (Artistic Director).
